It’s important to understand how and why you’re at risk for infection when working with sick people or in a hospital setting. In order to stay safe while you’re working in this industry, there are some things that you should do:

Stay clean–Wash your hands regularly and make sure not to touch anything that could spread germs (especially avoid shaking hands). If possible, wear disposable gloves when coming into contact with blood or bodily fluids from patients. Always wash up before eating, and desinfect your hands. Avoid to wear any makeup, perfume or cologne.

Wear the right clothes–When you come to work in a hospital setting, it’s important that you wear clothing and shoes that cover your body (especially if they’re white) so germs don’t rub off on other people. Make sure not to wear any jewelry- even watches can become infected with bacteria from contact! Always change out of your street clothes into appropriate attire for working around sick patients when entering an emergency department or general care area within a hospital.

Stay home when you’re feeling ill–Policies may vary by employer, but make sure to ask about them before taking sick days at work.
